The son of renowned Irish road racing ‘Flying Doctor” Fred MacSorely was taken to hospital on Saturday by air ambulance following a non-racing incident at the Armoy Road Races in Co Antrim.

Allister MacSorely was involved in a non-racing collision on the Lagge Road with a van and was treated at the scene by medics attending the races before being taken to the Royal Victoria in Hospital in Belfast by air ambulance.

He was at the races to work as a member of the MCUI Medical Team.

Mr MacSorely is now recovering at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

His colleague John Hinds was killed in an accident at the Skerries 100 in 2015.

The Lurgan medic’s well-known father Fred MacSorely retired from his role as a doctor at Irish road racing events last year.

Racing was then abandoned due to the weather conditions after heavy rainfall across Northern Ireland.

“A decision has been made in the interest of safety to abandon this meeting,” an Armoy Road Races spokesperson said.

“The Club would like to thank and acknowledge the support of the competitors, sponsors, volunteers and public. We can only look forward to next year’s event.”
