Cruisers – What to buy?

Cruisers – What to buy?

Good day lads,

Me again with some more newbie questions…

I’ve cleared all my "legal" questions thus far, was happy to know that because I’m getting old, at least I have no restrictions on the size of bike I can drive. I’ll be getting my theory exam this Saturday, and if everything goes well… I should be able to go for my learners permit and finally spend some money in two wheels.

I’m decided on a cruiser bike, that’s for sure. While the sport bikes are beautiful and probably more fun, it’s not what I’m looking for and I know that eventually I’ll end up upside down. Better not have the speeding temptation and go for the relax cruising experience, which is what I’m really looking for.

I went to JT’s last Saturday but unfortunately he wasn’t there. I was still able to look around and sit on a few bikes to check for sitting position, etc…

Initially I was going for a Dragstar 250, thinking that I had a restriction with the learner’s permit, but now that I know that I’m good to go, I’m loving the idea of the Dragstar 650, which for me has the perfect size and enough power to enjoy it on the road and last me for a while.

Would you guys recommend the Dragstar or any other similar model? Obviously, within the budget… yes, I’m sure Harley’s are way nicer but the price is just 3 or 4 times more expensive and for a first bike, I don’t see the point.

I always loved Yamaha, the engines are extremely reliable and parts are easy to come by… or at least in marine applications. Is it the same case for the bikes??

What should I look for in a 2000+ model? Any common issues I should be aware of?

As always, thank you so much for your help!

Cheers,
Rami.
