Garda press release

Do you know anyone using a motorbike this weekend.?

Saturday and Sunday afternoons are peak times for motorcycle collisions.

Since 7th July, there has been 9 motorcycle fatalities, now totalling 14 riders and 1 pillion passenger for the year to date. Motorcycles make up only about 1.5% of the national fleet, but 12-14% of fatalities

The RSA analysis of 2008-2012 motorcycle fatalities confirms that speed was a factor in half of all collisions.

Saturday and Sunday afternoons are peak times for motorcycle collisions.

Advice for motorcyclists

Ride with you dipped headlight on and wear additional hi viz material…remember a typical motorcycle is only one third the width of a car. Be safe/ Be seen.

• Always wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) which is CE approved from head to toe, and always make sure your helmet is fastened correctly.

• Please show restraint on the road, and never ride beyond your capabilities or that of your machine.

Advice for drivers, LOOK look and look again for that motorcycle. THINK BIKE this weekend

I seen the above on book face someone had shared it and some of what is said pissed me off.

Firstly the statistics about half of the recorded collisions were due to speed. The way i read that is that motorbike riders were at fault cause they were speeding? No mention as too the percentage of those crashes involving speed that were the cages or whatever other vehicle that was at fault

Secondly advice for bikers always have your dipped head light on…. eh most bikers don’t have the option of turning it off so again it looks like a dig at bikers

Then they say we should show restraint while riding and not to ride beyond our or our machin es capabilities. That makes it sound like most bikers are crazy drivers.

Am i just getting grumpy as i get older or does anyone else think that it is slightly anti biker?

It does have a good part about looking and looking again for bikes but to me the majority of it pisses me off :unsure2:
