Talking with an equally aged Old Fart, reminiscences revealed that back in the late nineteen-fifties to early nineteen-sixties, his Dad had an old brit combo, and that when the father was riding along through inclement weather, the Old Man would make a gesture with his left hand, patting it in under his right armpit as other riders approached and passed by … this being a form of mutually recognised motorcyclist signal of the times, understood as a stoic acknowledgement of the common sufferance of the state of shitty-wet-weatherness.
