Temporary Ground Anchor Review

Temporary Ground Anchor Review

How’yiz.

Last year I was looking everywhere for a temporary ground anchor solution as I moved into a rented house in which I couldn’t install a permanent ground anchor. Also the house is terraced so I had no access to the back garden.

Then I came across these yokes: http://www.groundbolt.co.uk/Motorcycles.html

Installing it is handy, you just :hammer: it into some soil with a sledge hammer, just make sure that you know there are no gas, water or electrical wires/pipes under the installation area.

On the website they list the pull out force values for their two different sizes. In worst possible soil conditions 240kg and 510kg and in best soil 650kg and 1025kg.

Here are the ways it can be removed as listed on their website:

"1/ Ripping it directly out of the ground with the motorcycle attached –
The holding power, once rotation is prevented by the chain, is phenomenal, trying to remove the anchor this way is almost certainly going to need a JCB or similar, especially for the larger anchors.

2/ Twisting the entire bike round the anchor, lifting the wheel until the entire assembly is out of the ground – Cannot be done if the anchor is near a wall or vehicle etc., or 2 anchors are used, and in any event would require superhuman effort from at least 2 people.

3/ Using a petrol disc cutter and slicing through the chain or anchor –
Not easy to do quietly.

4/ Unlocking the padlock in the normal way, taking the chain off and using a bar or stout screwdriver, and simply winding the anchor out, most anchors take about a minute or less to remove this way and leave no noticeable disturbance to the grass."

They’re fairly cheap as well around £25 plus delivery.

Last November I sanded the loop down and coated it with Hammerite to protect from rust, gonna do that again in the next week or two.

Obviously its not quite as secure as a cement/concrete installed anchor but its a brilliant temporary anchor solution.

Here are some photos of my Sherman anchor with my hefty Kryptonite chain…
