Cock of the North’ abandoned after oil spillage

Ivan Lintin – On his way to victory in the Lightweight Race

The Cock of the North meeting at Scarborough had to be abandoned on Sunday after an oil spillage in the Sidecar race on the Farm Bends section of the Yorkshire circuit made it unsafe to continue.

Clerk of the Course, Gary Thompson, called proceedings to a halt after consulting with top riders Ivan Lintin, Dean Harrison and Lee Johnston.

“It was like a skating rink and was just too dangerous to race on.” Scarborough specialist Lintin said.

The meeting had already had a troubled start with the start of racing delayed for an hour after a heavy downpour left the Oliver’s Mount circuit flooded with standing water.

When the action resumed it was Lintin, the 2015 Lightweight TT winner, who took victory on the RC Express Kawasaki ahead of James Cowton (Smith’s Kawasaki) in the Lightweight race.

The Lincolnshire rider had less luck in the 600cc race when he highsided his ZX600RR at Mountside Hairpin on the final lap as he tried to pass race winner, Dean Harrison’s Mar Train Yamaha R6.

The duo had led for all of the six laps with Northern Ireland’s Lee Johnston closing steadily on his ECC/Burdens Triumph after a slow start.

Johnston broke the lap record as he closed to within less than a second of Harrison who held on to take his second win of the meeting after triumphing in the opening superbike encounter.

The Bradford ace steered his R1 Yamaha to victory in the Senior event ahead of Lintin and Johnston.

Jamie Coward was the winner of the Classic F1 race on the Mistral Kawasaki with Ian and Carl Bell (Bells Yamaha) winning the Sidecar race that brought the curtain down prematurely on the day’s proceedings.
