Steering locking up !

Steering locking up !

Hey all,

I’d appreciate any thoughts on this or ideas on what to troubleshoot.
2004 ZX10R bought it october last, has 68k miles on it.

In the past month my steering has ‘locked’ about 4 times.
Twice turning left from stationary, once at about 30 mph and last night as I got onto the ferry that’s on my commute.

I’ve only done a few checks so far. The bike has a steering damper which was my first thing to check. I think it’s an ohlins (not sure) in a harris bracket.
I greased up all the bearings and gave it a look over. Are they prone to locking up? Maybe it needs a bit of a service. I have it turned way down anyway but I think I’ll take it off and rule it out. It’s so intermittent it will be hard to know if it is sorted.

Obviously the headstock bearings are the next things on my list. I feel no obvious catching but I haven’t got the front wheel off the ground to check this properly. Maybe I should just do em anyway as I don’t know when they were last replaced or even greased.

I had a look around and don’t see any obvious fouling of wires/cables etc. I did find one of the cable holders on the right had bent/fatigued to the point it was rubbing the bottom triple but it’s happened since I sorted that.
I did add a plastic holder for the clutch cable where there looked to be a mounting point for one and added heated grips and a bracket for the brake lines. That’s the only new stuff I can think of up front.

Also checked tyre pressure and although it needed some it happened since then. The tyres need to be replaced but the sensation is unlike heavy steering.

It’s kinda hard to explain how it feels but yesterday when it happened there was a barely audible crack as it came right. I was going pretty slow and breaking (and heading for the side of the ferry :woots:) so I was half thinking was a brake pad sticking? Would that affect the steering? I had been stopped for a while so the discs were cool enough.

Anyway it’s wrecking my head and VERY unnerving when it happens.
