Hayabusa Transmission Rebuild

Hayabusa Transmission Rebuild

Hi lads,

Just thought I’d share the pics of the gearbox rebuild the I completed over the winter. Who knows, if someone else has the problem in the future maybe a search will help them with this post.

Last summer my K1 Busa started to skip in second gear on heavy acceleration and I diagnosed it as being the dreaded 2nd gear transmission problem. There’s about 90k Km on her. And apparently they all go eventually cos 2nd gear in the Busa is the only gear that isn’t undercut.

It took about a week of evenings to get the engine out and disassembled. I got the father-in-law to weld up a stand for me, so I could work on the engine upsidedown (easiest way to get at the transmission). Investigation showed that 2nd gear cog was infact worn, and that caused it to slip out of gear on heavy acceleration. I circled the damage in one of the photos.

I ordered a fully racecut transmission from Schnitz racing in the US. This took about 2 months to arrive due to problems with their supplier. While I had the engine out I also:

Checked the valve clearances – they were perfect.

Replaced the clutch

Added a clutch mod ring to tighten up the gear changes

Added a clutch slave support

New heavy duty clutch springs

New gaskets all round

New coolant hoses all round as the old ones were perished

Resprayed the exhaust system

Added a Brembo clutch master cylinder

Reassembly took about a week of evenings also. She’s running like a dream now, gear changes are so slick. I think that’s about it really, hopefully the photos will upload too. If anyone encounters the same problem, gimme a shout, I’d be more than willing to offer my advice.

Cheers
