A provisional version of the 2016 MotoGP calendar confirms the new round in Austria, at the expense of Indianapolis.
Doubts have long been raised over the future of the second American event, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2008, and the mid-August date has now been handed to the Red Bull Ring.
Austria is the only venue change relative to this year’s 18 rounds – although Argentina has swapped places with Austin, with both Silverstone (17 July) and Sepang (9 October) moved earlier in the season. Jerez and Brno are still subject to contract.
The rumoured Thai race thus won’t take place until at least 2017, when Indonesia is also hoping for a place on the calendar. Indeed, 2017 could see the biggest calendar shake-up in years, with many circuit contracts up for renewal.
As previously announced, race day at Assen will switch from Saturday to Sunday in 2016
